Though I'm officially retired, I continue to teach courses in media ethics, media law, and media history at Linfield University and Pacific University. Previously I taught audio production, video production, interactive multimedia production, radio production and programming, sports media, social media, media writing and media studies in Europe, as well as the first year seminar, inquiry seminar, and senior capstone courses. I served as chair of the Journalism & Media Studies department; chair of the Radio & Audio Media division of the Broadcast Education Association; a member of the Library of Congress Radio Preservation Task Force; and a founding member of the International Association of Public Media Researchers.

My research focuses on public service media, media policy, and technology. My scholarship includes The Emergence of Community Radio in the United States: A Historical Examination of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters; book chapters in Community Radio in the 21st Century; The Palgrave Handbook of Global Radio; Digital Radio in Europe - Technologies, Industries & Cultures; and The Public in Public Media; articles in the Journal of Radio & Audio Media, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Interaction: Studies in Communication and Culture, Southern Review, Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, Journal of Media Education, and the Journal of Mass Media Ethics; and online content for the Public Radio News Directors Guide. I've produced a wide variety of content for audio and visual media, including the radio theater series Alive in Olympia, the documentary film The Pinot Chronicles: 25 Years of Oregon's International Pinot Noir Festival, and the interactive multimedia documentary Waiting for Peace: The Journals and Correspondence of a World War II Combat Medic.
